Riding the Train Part 1

My parents were able to visit again over Christmas.  They felt sorry for us since this was going to be our first Christmas without our good friends the Grants!  I'm so glad they came.

While they were here we tried to think of something different to do, that we hadn't already done with them.  So, we traveled to Ambato to ride the newly refurbished train.  The train itself hasn't been refurbished, but the railway system has.  The train was actually a bus on the tracks.  The Ecuadorian tourism company has several old trains that are being refurbished to run some of the more popular routes.  It was an all day tour with stops in a couple of different towns at the base of a volcano....which we couldn't see because of the weather.  It was a fun way to see some of the country from a different perspective.

These motorcycle guys road beside us the whole time to stop traffic at crossings.  They don't have the signals like we do in the US.  It felt like we were in a movie and they were racing the train to jump on board!

Our "cafecito" at the Urbina train station.

This man is deemed the "last ice man."  You can read about him HERE.
